Clinic & EVENTS information

Clinic positions are very limited as Shelley endeavours to give everyone equal opportunity to progress. The smaller boutique clinics provide a safe learning environment, not adding stress to horses and humans.

Shelley also started last year introducing no fence sitting other than family supporters and the introduction of two types of participation:

  1. “With A Horse” - As per normal you bring your horse and participate fully in the 2/3 day clinics, including pre clinic Zoom, pre clinic courses, chat groups, talks etc and get a progression training plan. Usually 8 participants only.

  2. “Without A Horse” - You don't bring a horse but you get to participate in the 2/3 day clinics, including pre clinic Zoom, pre clinic courses, chat groups, talks etc and get a progression training plan. (you are fully involved in the clinic just without a horse). These positions are limited to 5 participants only.

Please be aware that if the clinic is not showing on the booking site then it is sold out.

TYPES OF CLINICS & WORKSHOPS

2 Day Teaching People How to Train Horses Clinic

What to Expect at a Clinic Event:

At these clinics you start working with Shelley prior to the event by working through a pre-clinic online course. A week prior to the clinic there is a pre-clinic Zoom meeting with all participants. During the two days of the clinic participants work in small groups and pairs and are involved in daily discussions and presentations. Activities involve a mix of groundwork and ridden work depending on where the horse is at. These clinics give everyone a “taste” of Shelley’s methods and approaches to working with horses. Each horse is respected as an individual and allows everyone to gain insights into how to support a horse to progress their training and performance; overcome problems and struggles; and nurture partnership and connection (and what this really means practically!).

What You will Learn:

The core principle you will discover working with Shelley is that everything you train and expect under saddle has a starting point on the ground. By understanding this starting point and how it progresses under saddle you can solve problem behaviour, remove frustration when you are working with your horse and improve your confidence.
• How to analyse and evaluate a horse’s behaviour and what it understands and what it can perform confidently
• Strategies to improve a horse’s focus, learning and confidence
• How to progress the benefits of ground work into under saddle training
• How to overcome problems on the ground and in the saddle

SIGNIFICANT FOR: Spooky/anxious/nervous horses, young/green horses, horses with ANY behavioural or riding issue OR people keen to improve their horse training knowledge, skills and performance results, developing contact and connection.

What You Need to Bring to a Clinic:

For ground work: Rope halter & 12-13ft lead rope (the greatest training tool anyone can have in their tack room), training stick & string or short lunge whip or training flag, gloves (recommended but optional), riding boots and protection boots/bandages (recommended but optional) for your horse including bell boots if your horse is shod.
For ridden work: Saddle, girth, saddle blanket, bridle (can be bitless or with a bit), approved riding helmet, whip (if required), and riding boots.

Organisation:

The clinic will run from 8am-4pm each day. You will need to arrive early on the first day to allow time for introductions, signing waivers, etc. Your session can focus just on ground work, ground work and ridden work or just ridden activities depending on where Shelley and you determine you are up to with your horse.

Types of Participants (Participant with Horse or Participant without Horse)

Below is a description of each participant type:

Participant with a Horse - These are participants that bring along one horse to the clinic and participate in the coaching activities and discussions. They also participate in the pre clinic Zoom calls and get access to the pre clinic online course for a month prior to participating in the clinic. The pre clinic Zoom is a great way to either introduce yourself and explain where you are up to with your horse and hear what Shelley plans to do during the clinic.

Participant without Horse - These are participants that get access to the clinic online course for a month prior to the clinic, participate in the pre clinic Zoom calls. They do not bring a horse to the clinic but get to participate in the discussions and observe the coaching activities. This clinic position is ideal for those that are unsure of whether their horse will cope with the travelling required for the clinic, or being able to emotionally handle the clinic environment. Being involved in the pre-clinic activities and being able to work with Shelley through the online course at home with your horse will help you learn how to help your horse. Then being able to attend the clinic and observe the other horses and how Shelley's process progresses and support horses will give you many ideas and inspiration for how to progress your own horse.

Fence Sitter - We don’t have fence sitting for members of the public. Fence sitting tickets are only issued to partners (over the age of 16) attending with a full participant as a support role. Our clinics are designed to focus on the learning of those that have made a substantial investment in money and time as participants reducing the pressure on both horse and human in the arena. Photographs and video recording of the clinic are NOT allowed by Fence Sitters without express authorisation.

Clinic Cost:

Based on a 2 day event:

From $495 (Participant with Horse) or From $250 (Participant without Horse)

Clinic costs cover daily ground fees and day yards. Camping and stabling will be extra and needs to be organised by participants separately with the management of the facility.

Important:

  1. There is a strict rule that there is to be NO photography or videoing at clinics, workshops or seminars without express permission.

  2. Everyone over the age of 16 that attends the clinic MUST be a participant or fence sitter, even if they are a support person. These events are designed to maximise learning and for Shelley’s time to be dedicated to helping those that attend. Therefore, the clinic is designed to involve only a small number of people.

  3. Payment for the clinic needs to be made in full a month prior to the clinic. Once full payment is received each participant (with or without horse) will be given access to the online clinic course.

  4. Please make sure you read the Payment, Cancellation and Refund Policy carefully during the booking process so that you understand what happens if you cannot make the final payment or attend the clinic for any given reason.

  5. Tea, Coffee, Water and snacks will be provided at the clinic but you will need to bring your own meal provisions.

  6. Please make sure you bring a camp chair and feed provisions for your horse.

  7. No Stallions or Rigs permitted at clinics.

Other Events

1 Day Intensive Practical + Online Clinic

What to Expect at an Intensive Clinic

These types of events are supercharge learning programs. Payment for the event includes the cost of one of Shelley’s courses that corresponds to the event (round penning, groundwork, riding foundation or contact and connection). Therefore, you work online with Shelley working through the course prior to the clinic day. Then at the clinic day learning and performance is fine tuned in intensive coaching sessions and discussions. These are Participant With a Horse only positions.

Building Confidence & Trust Workshops

What to Expect at a Workshop

These are evening or full day workshops where you leave your horse at home and get to sit down and learn Shelley’s practical approach to solve confidence and trust issues in you and your horse.

Shelley is unique in the hose world. She is a skilled horse trainer, however, she holds a PhD in human critical thinking and development of expert performance. Shelley has spent many years identifying the knowledge, skill and self awareness gaps in people’s understanding of horses and building skill.

Rider confidence can be looked at through many lenses from psychology to coaching. Shelley goes to the heart of the matter which is learning. What we learn in life can be consciously but also unconsciously cultivating our beliefs and tendencies. This is why one approach for building confidence will help one person but not another. Also why two people can ride a horse and appear to ride well but the horse will respond completely differently for each rider.

What You will Learn

In these workshop you will discover the following.

  • What actually are feelings of confidence and trust?

  • What “brave” riders actually teach us about being “brave”.

  • Causes of confidence issues.

  • The impact of rider confidence on horses.

  • Practical strategies for learning how to be confident and trust your horse.

  • Relevant understandings about horses that can improve your interpretation and decision making when working with them.

  • Significant, yet rarely identified ways of working with horses that can help them develop confidence being with you.

Workshops are Significant for: Those that are interested in building confidence and trust with horses. You may be struggling with confidence after an incident with a particular horse or just interested or involved in helping people with their horses.
