Importance of educating people

The equestrian world often focuses on horse training, their performance, problems, and so on. There is a tendency to be naive about the reality that the most significant influence on horses is the knowledge, skill, and experience of the human sitting in the saddle or holding their lead rope.

If you talk to equine professionals or organisers of equestrian associations, they will all tell you the same thing - horses are easy, but people can be difficult.

Dr Shelley Appleton has a program for sharing her expertise in teaching people how to train horses.
This page is dedicated to sharing this process and the names and contacts of people that have worked with Shelley to increase their awareness and insight into how equestrians learn and are influenced.

The Equestrian Educators Program

What's the main objective of the program?

The main objective of the program is give coaches or interested people the knowledge, skills and self awareness necessary to teach owners how to work well with their horses. The program identifies that when it comes to helping horses, it inevitably means it is the owners of the horses that we need to teach in order for them to overcome the struggles they are having with their horse

Most people who will be interested in this program will be trainers, coaches, leaders and any equestrian interested in helping people and their horses.

How will the program be structured and delivered?

The program is structured into 2 Phases.

Phase 1 focuses on understanding how to teach people how to train horses. It is delivered online in 5 teaching modules. Topics include understanding how humans learn, what is understood about effective teaching strategies, overcoming barriers and challenges of the human-horse learning experience; and creating teaching resources. The course can be taken in a self paced manner or you can be part of the twice a year (January & August) guided learning with Dr Shelley Appleton in a 6 weeks delivery. Anyone enrolled in the course is invited to participate during these time periods. Enrolment gives you access to the course for one year. You can find out more about “Teaching People How to Train HorsesHERE.

Once Phase 1 is successfully completed there is an option to become listed as a recommended educator. The list identifies people that have been dedicated to learning about how to teach people about horses and applying it in the realm of their area of interest and expertise. These people are not recommended trainers or coaches of the reboot program. You can find the list of recommended educators below.

Phase 2 focuses on developing competency in Dr Shelley Appleton’s Reboot Program of rebuilding a horse’s training from groundwork up into the saddle. This phase has two stages. The first stage is becoming a student of the Reboot Program and working through the process with Shelley with TWO different horses. The second stage is participating in the Mentorship Program for 12 months and demonstrating competence at teaching people how to train horses. The people the complete both phases and stages are listed as recommended trainers that have been identified as mentors for working through the Reboot Program.

What unique perspective or knowledge does Dr. Shelley Appleton bring to this program?

Dr. Shelley Appleton is unique in the equestrian world as she is highly skilled horse trainer but holds a PhD in human learning and the development of expertise. This makes her an effective educator to people and helped her establish her business Calm Willing Confident Horses, as a helpful resource for people all over the world.

Who would benefit from this program?

Coaches, trainers and people interested in furthering their understanding of how to influence other people to improve the handling, management and riding of horses.

What benefits or outcomes can they expect?

The first phase of the program is dedicated to learning about the human side of the horse-human partnership. When you are passionate about helping people with their horse it is not uncommon to experience frustration. Horses tend to be the easy of the two species you have to work with. This program aims to help you understand why people can struggle to learn or can be frustrating to work with. When you gain an appreciation for the human element of the horse-human partnership, many of the frustrations disappear and you can implement strategies to help them and make your coaching experiences more rewarding.

The second phase focuses on training horses and understanding how to influence the horse and then teaching others how to do it.

How much does the program cost?

Phase 1 Teaching People to Train Horses enrolment is $1200 (AUD) or $150 (AUD) per month for 10 months.

Phase 2: Stage 1 Reboot Program enrolment is $1099 (AUD) or $112 (AUD) per month for 12 months; and Stage 2 Mentorship Program enrolment is $500 (AUD) upfront and then $200 per month subscription.
